Have Pets? Consider Futon Furnishings

Pets are great. Dogs or cats are an endless source of fun and entertainment, and they tend to love you no matter what. I personally have a cat that lives in the house. She loves to play, has a great personality, and is an excellent mouser. The only problem is the cat hair.

Cat hair — or pet hair in general — is a nuisance. It’s ugly and is a constant chore to clean up.

I am fortunate in that I have hard wood floors and leather furniture, both of which do not require a lot of work in removing pet hair. I vacuum it up off of the floors before cleaning them and can simply wipe it off of my leather furniture. However, my cat enjoys sleeping in a small spare bedroom in the house, and this seems to be the place where I find the most cat hair.

Pet hair is very difficult to vacuum up. The best vacuum for pet hair is one that not only has good suction, but a roller brush that will help sweep up hair from the carpet or upholstery. You can also use a lint roller to remove pet hair from furniture and garments. If you don’t have a roller handy, masking tape works well for picking up pet hair from furniture.

Vacuuming and using a roller takes time. If you have unexpected company or house guests, chances are that you don’t have time to do a thorough job in picking up pet hair. That’s why I put a futon in my spare bedroom instead of a regular bed.

The futon doubles as a couch, which is great because the room is quite small. I can easily fold it into a couch and create several extra feet that are not normally available in the spare room when there is a bed in it. Best yet, I can easily change the appearance of the futon by switching the cover.

Futon covers are available in a variety of solid colors or printed patterns. With a few throw pillows to add a dash of color accents, they are a great way to change the look of any room. When it comes to pet hair, having a futon and some spare cheap futon covers around is a Godsend.

Futon covers are available in different types of fabric, most of which are machine washable. Many futon covers have a 3-sided zipper. It’s easy to unzip a cover and replace it with another futon cover. If you’re fighting pet hair, vacuum or roll as much hair off of the futon first, then remove the cover and wash it in your wash machine. This is a fast and easy way to remove the hair, to preserve your futon mattress upholstery, and to keep things clean.

Having futons and some extra covers around is also a handy method for dealing with pet hair and company. It takes just a few minutes to switch out your futon cover with a crisp, clean cover that’s free of cat hair or dog hair. With the clean cover, your guests do not have to worry about itching or allergies from sitting or sleeping on furniture that’s full of pet hair.

Futons are some of the most cost and space efficient styles of furniture in the marketplace. And they’re an excellent addition to any household with indoor pets.
